مستخلص: | This study was undertaken to determine the relative risk of violence among students attending Hawaii schools with higher proportions of children of Department of Defense (DOD) personnel. Approximately 12% of the total public school enrollment of nearly 190,000 students is DOD connected. Forty-eight schools (8 high schools, 8 intermediates, and 32 elementary schools) enroll about 95% of the military dependents and nearly 80% of all federal departments in Hawaii public schools. Data for these 48 schools were analyzed and means compared to statewide averages for the past 3 school years on indicators and variables related to risk of disorder and violence. These included measures of socioeconomic status, limited English proficiency, attendance, graduation, student perceptions of home-school relations and learning climate, and the rates of commission of six categories of offenses leading to suspensions. The most salient risk factor for disorder and violence for DOD-connected students and for most students in Hawaii is large school size. On most measures, the schools with high percentages of DOD dependents compared favorably with statewide averages for comparable schools. Exceptions were drug offenses related to smoking cigarettes. Appendix A is "Federally Connected Pupils by School and Employing Agency"; Appendix B is "Hawaii Public High Schools, Intermediate and Middle Schools, and Elementary Schools Ordered by Percent Enrollment Military in School Year 1997-98"; Appendix C is "School Status Report for School Year 1997-98 for the Hawaii High Schools, Intermediate and Middle Schools, and Elementary Schools with the Highest Percentages of Department of Defense Dependents Enrolled"; Appendix D is "Tables from the Hawaii State Department of Business, Economic Development, & Tourism"; and Appendix E is "Selected Newspaper Articles from 'The Honolulu Advertiser.'"
