International law and politics are important aspects of the geopolitics of the Nordic Arctic, as is the historical, political, cultural and socio-economic context, and, they have an impact on the individual’s capabilities to live a life of dignity. Law and politics are democratic instruments for societal changes and for the full realisation of people’s rights and capabilities. In this chapter, the capabilities approach is used as a reference frame for considerations of the implementation of the obligations towards older women in the Nordic Arctic that come with the ratification of The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. |
