This work project represents a case study on the impact of a major technological disruption entering an existing industry and arising challenges. More specifically, it aims to help students to understand the transformation that the entry of the electric vehicle (EV) causes to the traditional automotive market. The case study is to be used in master’s and executive education business strategy courses. The applied information is solely obtained through public sources. To better illustrate the dynamics related to the market disruption, a connection is made to the case of Volkswagen. This project highlights the challenges that companies face in relation to strategic decisions to put innovation first and disrupt traditional business models. In the subsequent analysis, and following the guide lines for this field lab, we present a literature review on two relevant topics to analyze the case study: the sustainability of competitive advantage and dealing with disruptive strategies and business models. This is important to understand Volkswagen’s transition into the electric vehicle era and to becoming a software-based company. Finally, it is analyzed how Volkswagen built and sustained its competitive advantage in the traditional industry and how it can successfully react to disruption and thus also sustain its competitive advantage in the EV industry. Further, a deep dive into Mobility as a service is conducted, giving VW recommendations on how to be successful in the field |
