O Teatro da União foi o principal espaço de sociabilidade em São Luís do Maranhão na primeira metade do século XIX. O período que compreende sua construção, inauguração e as primeiras atividades corresponde aos anos de 1815 a 1823, marcadamente sua primeira fase sob a administração do empresário português Eleutério Varela. Nos séculos XIX e XX, o primeiro ciclo da casa teatral foi registrado por três autores maranhenses como um acontecimento, mas com parcas informações. Os escritos dos autores, Sabbas da Costa, César Marques e José Jansen consubstanciaram-se numa narrativa cristalizada integrando a memória cultural. O presente estudo centra-se na trajetória do Teatro da União. Tal empresa foi realizada a partir da problematização da narrativa cristalizada e da aquisição do corpus documental. Esses fatores possibilitaram delinear os “desacontecimentos” da primeira fase do Teatro, ou seja, as motivações, os recursos, a primeva estrutura física da casa teatral, os agentes envolvidos no financiamento e na produção dos espetáculos. O estudo complementa-se com uma análise do contexto socioeconômico e ideológico vinculado às instituições políticas. Por fim, o trabalho consiste em um contributo para os estudos do Maranhão oitocentista e para a historiografia do teatro no Brasil e em Portugal. |

During the first half of the 19th century, the playhouse Teatro da União was the main space for socializing in São Luís do Maranhão. The building, opening and first activities of this playhouse took place from 1815 to 1823, noticeably its first period under the management of the Portuguese businessman Eleutério Varela. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the first cycle of the playhouse was recorded by three authors from Maranhão as an event, but their information is scarce. The writings of these authors − Sabbas da Costa, César Marques and José Jansen − have crystallized into a narrative that is an integral part of our cultural memory. The present study focuses on reconstructing the itinerary of Teatro da União. We began by problematising the crystallized narrative and collecting the documental corpus. These considerations made it possible for us to delineate the ‘non-events’ of the first cycle of the Theatre, that is, the motivations, the resources, the original physical structure of the playhouse, the agents involved in its financing, management and production of the shows. This study is complemented with an analysis of the socio-economic and ideological context linked to political institutions. Finally, we have endeavoured to contribute to the study of 19th-century Maranhão and to the History of Theatre in Brazil and in Portugal |
