A presente dissertação, inserida no Mestrado em Arqueologia, tem como contexto geográfico a cidade de Guimarães e como foco cronológico a idade média, objetivando o estudo do sistema defensivo medieval numa perspetiva diacrónica, desde a sua génese até à atualidade e, deste modo, contribuir para o estudo do processo construtivo dos sistemas defensivos urbanos medievais portugueses. Guimarães é uma cidade com elevado valor histórico e patrimonial que, em parte, se fica a dever ao seu longo passado ocupacional e aos bens culturais que ainda ostenta, nomeadamente de cariz medieval. Apesar dos diversos projetos de investigação sobre a Guimarães medieval, existem ainda várias questões em aberto e problemáticas por estudar, particularmente no que se refere ao processo construtivo da muralha medieval e ao seu estado atual de conservação. Assim, reconhecendo que os sistemas defensivos urbanos conheceram um processo construtivo complexo, dispendioso e dilatado ao longo de muitos anos, até séculos, mas também constituíram um imponente marcador urbanístico e arquitetónico, o principal objetivo deste estudo é proceder a uma análise detalhada da muralha medieval de Guimarães, procurando a correta definição topográfica da sua morfologia e perímetro, através do levantamento e análise dos vestígios materiais sobreviventes, exumados pela arqueologia ou que atualmente ainda se conservam ou estão fossilizados na malha da cidade, mas também estudar o seu processo construtivo e características arquitetónicas.
This dissertation, included in the Master´s Degree in Archeology, has the city of Guimarães as its geographic context and the Middle Ages as its chronological focus, with the objective of studying the medieval defensive system from a diachronic perspective, from its genesis to the present day and, in this way, contribute to the study of the construction process of Portuguese medieval urban defensive systems. Guimarães is a city with high historical and heritage value which, in part, is due to its long occupational past and the cultural assets it still boasts, particularly those of a medieval nature. Despite the various research projects on medieval Guimarães, these are still several open and problematic questions to be studied, particularly regarding the construction process of the medieval wall and its current state of conservation. Thus, recognizing that urban defensive systems underwent a complex, expensive and extensive construction process over many years, even centuries, but also constituted an imposing urban and architectural marker, the main objective of this study is to carry out a detailed analysis of the medieval wall of Guimarães, seeking the correct topographic definition of its morphology and perimeter, through the survey and analysis of the surviving material remains, exhumed by archeology or thar are currently still preserved or fossilized in the city, but also studying its construction process and characteristics architectural. |
