| الوصف: | Three themes of Marcuse’s approach, views, and attitudes concerning Judaism, Jewish history, and the State of Israel are studied.Marcuse, whose research and philosophy addressed the “Jewish question” only incidentally, never denied his Jewish origins. At the same time, he never used this objective fact as an exclusive or decisive argument to affect his views on various issues, not even world-historical matters of particular relevance to the Jews. In general, Marcuse endeavored to constitute the Marxian Realm of Freedom, or at least strove to fathom why, throughout modern history, an authentic revolution for human liberation of man has failed repeatedly. Nevertheless, his major and immediate intellectual and sociopolitical concern was the struggle against the reemergence of an oppressive reign of terror—including the possible recurrence of a genocide.Marcuse supported the existence of Israel and its right to defend itself. His objective rationale was, ultimately, the Holocaust of European Jewry; that is, the perception of the State of Israel as a refuge and a shelter for the Jews against persecution and repression. But this position did not prevent him from strongly criticizing Israeli policy after the Six-Day War and the treatment of the Palestinians in Israel and the occupied territories as inferior, which he viewed as an expression of “racist and nationalistic tendencies.” He regarded the policy of Israeli governments and its possible consequences as the greatest threat to the continued existence of the Jewish state. |
