الوصف: Discusses the fate of the Carvajal family in Mexico, who first arrived from Spain in 1580. Describes the activities of the Inquisition and the difficulties encountered by Conversos in maintaining their secret Jewish practices. Focuses on Luis Carvajal the Younger, born in Spain in 1567, who was told that he was of Jewish origin at the age of 13 and proceeded to become a knowledgeable and creative leader of the clandestine Mexican Jewish community. In 1589 he and various members of his family were arrested and interrogated by the Inquisition. In 1590 he was released after confessing his guilt (he did so in order to get out of prison) and was sentenced to acts of penitence. In 1594 he was denounced by a friend under torture, and he was rearrested along with other members of his family. He confessed to being a Judaizer and became a martyr to his Jewish faith. He was burned at the stake in Mexico City in 1596, along with his mother and three sisters.
