Claim: |
1. A method of detecting and/or measuring a biogenic amine or ammonia in a sample comprising: a. providing a complex of formula I MA-C≡N-MB (I), wherein MA is a Ru(II) complex and MB is a lanthanide metal complex; b. bringing the vapor of the sample into contact with said complex of formula I, whereby said biogenic amine or ammonia displaces the MA-C≡N portion of the complex of formula I from the MB portion; and c. detecting the presence of displaced MA-C≡N by measuring a colorimetric response. |

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the complex is of formula Ia MA-C≡N-MB-N≡C-MA (Ia). |

A method for detecting and/or measuring a biogenic amine or ammonia in a food sample, comprising a. providing a complex of formula I MA-C≡N-MB(I), wherein MA is a Ru(II) complex and MB is a lanthanide metal complex; b. exposing the complex to a food product; and c. detecting any change in color, said detected change being indicative of the presence of biogenic amine or ammonia in, on or in association with, the food product. |
