مستخلص: A method of moving an object in a generally circular manner on the surface of a touchpad and causing a list to be scrolled as long as the object is moving, wherein a method is provided for activating a scrolling function, wherein a method is provided for determining what direction scrolling should occur based upon a direction of movement when scrolling is engaged, and wherein the direction of scrolling is only changed by an abrupt change in direction of the object.

Claim: 1. A method for scrolling using a touchpad for interface control, said method comprising the steps of: 1) providing a touchpad including a linear scrolling region and a general purpose area of operation; 2) touching down with a pointing object in the linear scrolling region to engage a scrolling mode; 3) moving the pointing object in an initial direction of scrolling to thereby begin a scrolling action; 4) moving the pointing object from the linear scrolling region to the general purpose area, wherein the scrolling action continues in the initial direction; 5) moving the pointing object along a curvilinear path to continue the scrolling action in the initial direction; and 6) keeping the pointing object disposed on the touchpad as long as the scrolling action is desired, and removing the pointing object to disengage the scrolling mode.
Claim: 2. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein the method further comprises the step of enabling a change in direction of scrolling only upon an abrupt change of direction of movement of the pointing object that is at least greater than 150 degrees.
Claim: 3. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein the method further comprises the step of not allowing a change in direction of scrolling when the curvilinear path changes between clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) movements.
Claim: 4. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein the method further comprises the step of enabling the initial direction of scrolling to be in a list that scrolls vertically or horizontally.
Claim: 5. The method as defined in claim 4 wherein the method further comprises the step of providing the linear scrolling region along a left or right edge of the touchpad.
Claim: 6. The method as defined in claim 4 wherein the method further comprises the step of providing the linear scrolling region along a top or bottom edge of the touchpad.
Claim: 7. A method for scrolling using a touchpad for interface control, said method comprising the steps of: 1) providing a touchpad including a scrolling activation region and a general purpose area of operation; 2) touching down with a pointing object in the scrolling activation region to engage a scrolling mode; 3) moving the pointing object out of the scrolling activation region and into the general purpose area to thereby perform a scrolling action in an initial direction of scrolling; 4) moving the pointing object along a curvilinear path for the scrolling action to continue; and 5) keeping the pointing object disposed on the touchpad as long as the scrolling action is desired, and removing the pointing object to disengage the scrolling mode.
Claim: 8. The method as defined in claim 7 wherein the method further comprises the step of enabling a change in direction of scrolling only upon an abrupt change of direction of movement of the pointing object that is at least greater than 150 degrees.
Claim: 9. The method as defined in claim 7 wherein the method further comprises the step of not allowing a change in direction of scrolling when the curvilinear path changes between clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) movements.
