مستخلص: The invention provides a device for adhering cells in a specific and predetermined position, and associated methods. The device includes a plate defining a surface and a plurality of cytophilic islands that adhere cells, isolated by cytophobic regions to which cells do not adhere, contiguous with the cytophilic islands. The islands or the regions or both may be formed of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM).

Claim: 1. A device, comprising: a plate defining a surface; and a plurality of cytophilic islands on the surface to which cells adhere isolated by cytophobic regions to which cells do not adhere contiguous with the cytophilic islands, wherein the cytophilic islands are arranged in a grid pattern on the plate.
Claim: 2. A device as in claim 1, wherein at least one of the cytophilic islands and cytophobic regions is formed of a self-assembled monolayer.
Claim: 3. A device as in claim 1, wherein at least one of the cytophilic islands is formed of a self-assembled monolayer.
Claim: 4. A device as in claim 1, wherein at least one of the cytophobic regions is formed of a self-assembled monolayer.
Claim: 5. A device as in claim 1, wherein at least one of the cytophilic islands is between 1 and 100 square microns.
Claim: 6. A device as in claim 1, wherein the cytophilic islands adhere one cell type but do not substantially adhere a second cell type different from the first cell type.
Claim: 7. A device as in claim 1, wherein at least one of the cytophilic islands binds only a selected cell type.
Claim: 8. A device as in claim 1, wherein the grid pattern comprises a pattern of parallel lines.
Claim: 9. A device as in claim 1, wherein the surface comprises at least one cell bound to a cytophilic island.
Claim: 10. A device as in claim 9, wherein the cell has been exposed to a dye.
Claim: 11. A device as in claim 9, wherein the cell has been exposed to a fluorescently-labeled compound.
Claim: 12. A device as in claim 9, wherein the cell has been exposed to a treatment or a compound that causes a change in a spectrophotometric emission, reflection or absorption of the cell.
Claim: 13. A device as in claim 1, comprising a plurality of cells bound to the plurality of cytophilic islands.
Claim: 14. A device as in claim 1, comprising a plurality of different cell types bound to the plurality of cytophilic islands.
Claim: 15. A device as in claim 1, comprising a plurality of same cell types bound to the plurality of cytophilic islands.
Claim: 16. A device as in claim 1, wherein the cytophilic islands are of a size and shape appropriate for binding individual cells on each island.
Claim: 17. A device as in claim 1, further comprising a detector unit comprising a multiplicity of individual detectors arranged in an array corresponding spatially to the cytophilic islands of the plate.
Claim: 18. A device as in claim 1, further comprising a detector unit comprising a single detector which may be sequentially positioned over each cytophilic island of the plate.
Claim: 19. A device as in claim 1, comprising cytophilic islands bearing cells of known types which act as references to allow classification of cells on the plate.
Claim: 20. A device as in claim 9, wherein the cell is a mammalian cell.
