مستخلص: The main deposits being exploited are at Baranow, Chelsty, Szkucin, Palegi and Kozow and the Gosciniec open pit will begin operations in 2006. Applications include building bricks, roofing tiles and wall and floor tiles. The mineral compositions are similar and include illite and varying amounts of kaolinite, smectite, chlorite and mixed layered minerals, mainly illite/smectite. Non-clay minerals are quartz, haematite and sometimes feldspars. The raw materials are generally free from undesirable phases, such as carbonate minerals (calcite, dolomite), pyrite and water soluble sulphates. The organic matter contents are low, making them suitable for ceramic tiles. The clays exhibit good sinterability and are usually treated in the temperature range 1 100-1 150 degrees C.
