مستخلص: | Traditional technology in stone quarrying, especially pneumatic drills and high temperature flame burners, have low energy efficiency. The problems of introducing new technology with particular attention to aspects of energy utilisation, is discussed. Cutting technologies in use in the granite quarries of Sardinia include slotting with a flame torch, explosive splitting and wedge shearing, with some quarries using the more advanced techniques of diamond wire sawing and waterjet kerfing. Data on technical efficiency and unit cutting costs for each method is given. A simple model, implmented on a PC, is used to show the advantages of using the advanced technologies, especially for high value material and quarries with a high recovery.
