مستخلص: The study of mining-related environmental risks is relatively new to Portugal. Recent lines of research are addressing the need for global geochemical data, for information on soil and water quality and for an understanding of dispersal, transport and deposition mechanisms, investigating of uranium- and coal-related pollution and constructing databanks. Possibilities for remediation include the use of mineral processing technology, engineering geotechnics and biochemistry. Stream sediments and alluvial soils from the gold mining areas of Jales, Tinoca and Miguel Vacas display geochemical anomalies for different heavy metals, which originate to a large extent with tailings and mine waste. The associations define geochemical signatures closely related to the original mineral parageneses. Potentially most harmful are As, Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd, Ag, Sb, Mn and Fe, which will require particular attention in future studies.
