ملاحظة: Vignette drawing with pencil notations regarding reproduction in margins. Label glued to verso gives title and artist. Executed on artist's board. Removed from a frame 7/28/49. '423', '96/9' and 'Tag 1668' had been written on a removed backing. Signed in lower right of drawing.
Artist: Houfe notes Fitchew as a portraitist and illustrator who contributed studies of heads to the English illustrated magazine, 1886. Waters notes him as a watercolor painter living in Bromley.
History: The label glued to the verso and the pencil notes in the margins indicate that the drawing was intended for reproduction in The quiver, a periodical publication published in both London and N.Y. by Cassell between Sept. 1861 and at least Nov. 1897. Illustrations by Fitchew are found in examined issues of the magazine (1893-1896) but the exact date of issue for this illustration remains undetermined.
Subject: Drawing shows the south-west corner of Wolsey's palace. The beginning of the Wren addition to Hampton Court, attached to the palace, is shown in this drawing in pencil only. The drawing includes a view of a garden in the foreground. The palace, located on the banks of the Thames, 15 miles south-west of London, was occupied by Wolsey from 1514-1529. The Wren addition was completed in 1699. Though no date is attached to this drawing, it was probably done in the 1880's or 1890's.
Provenance: Item was purchased by the Folgers from Thomas Thorp in April of 1927. According to Thorp, he had purchased the drawing from the collection of the architect John Belcher.
