This paper proposes a computer-aided instruction and estimation system for perspective drawing. It can be applied in training novice drawers the concept and skills about drawing perspective lines. The proposed system allows the user to input an image, and prompts with step by step drawing guidelines for the user to practice drawing correct perspective line segments. Two stages, a training phase and a testing phase, are designed to establish the user with perspective line drawing skills and to evaluate the quality of the work drawn by the user, respectively. In the training stage, the system automatically detects the perspective edge line segments of the input image and prompts them one at a time, the user can repeat drawing the corresponding edge strokes on the canvas until it is accepted by the system. In the testing phase, the user draws all of the perspective line segments by himself/herself. The system compares the strokes drawn by the user with the edge segments detected, and evaluates a score and makes suggestions to the user. In our system the perspective edge line segments detection process and the line segments matching process are all performed automatically, which makes the proposed method with high feasibility and practicability. College students with engineering background are invited to test the proposed system. Experimental results show that most users can draw perspective line strokes corresponding to an input image in more accurate manner after the practice process of the proposed system.
