According to statistics data reported by Ministry of Labor, the mortality ratio of brain and cardiovascular diseases in construction industry is ranked top five among all industries in recent years. The safety as well as physical and mental health of employees in the construction industry is important and worth to be discussed. The environment of construction sites are complex and dangerous and have higher operational risks, compared to other industries. Ministry of Labor pointed out that irregular working hours, long-term overtime work, and noisy operating environment are easy to cause employees’ work stress and work loadings. This study focuses on the construction site management personnel to explore the relationships among work stress, safety behavior, professional identity, perception of social status and social support. A total of 300 paper questionnaires were distributed, and 174 valid paper questionnaires were returned with rate of 58%. In addition, 113 electronic questionnaires were returned. The total amount of the valid samples was 287. Through statistical analyses, it was found that in average, professional identity of construction site management personnel is rated close to agree. Family support is higher than any other social supports. In terms of safety behavior, safety compliance and safety participation are rated higher than agree. In terms of Effort/Reward-ratio, male is more imbalanced than female; employees with neither overtime pays nor compensatory leaves are more imbalanced than those having overtime pays and compensatory leaves; employees working at the companies with the headquarters located in the central–north Taiwan are more imbalanced than the ones whose headquarters at located in the southern Taiwan; employees worked in the construction sites in the central-north Taiwan are more imbalanced than the ones worked in the sites of the southern Taiwan. This study employed Structural Equation Modeling to construct the relationships among work stress, safety behavior, professional identity, social support and perception of social status. As a result, at a 95% confidence level, we have discovered inverse relationship between work stress and safety behavior; inverse relationship between social support (company support, family support) and work stress;inverse relationship between professional identity and work stress;indirect and inverse relationship between perception of social status and work stress;positive relationship between perception of social status and professional identity;positive relationship between company support and professional identity. In conclusion, to promote safety behavior of construction site, it is important to reduce work stress. Positive supports from employees’ families and companies able to reduce work stress. When employees feel their value, have the sense of belonging and other positive feelings in the work, they will have more identity in their work and get more positive energy to reduce the work stress. By implementing appropriate ways to reduce work stress and avoid excessive pressure, the construction site management personnel will have more spare time on noticing safety.
