The trend of gear design is to provide the gear teeth withe surfaces being in contact at a point but not at a line. The bearing contact is located at the middle region of the gear tooth surfaces and thus edge contact can be avoided. This thesis inrestigates generation and stress analysis of helical gear pair with ladder-shaped teeth. The proposed rack-cutter with ladder-shaped in this thesis comes from the traditional rack-cutter and two circular-arc are used to modify the circular-arc of the addendum and the deddendum. This study presents the mathematical model based on the gear theory and the concept of differential geometry. According to the developed mathematical model, the stress distribution is also investigated using the commerical FEA package, ABAQUS/Standard. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the finite element stress analyses under various design parameters and different contact positions.
