Because of the geopolitical location in early Taiwan, many Fujian (福建) and Guangdong (廣東) residents in coastal areas in China immigrated to Taiwan, along with their custom and culture, which made a great impact on Taiwan. Painting techniques are also the case. The early immigrants had the needs of architecture painting. They hired craftsmen in Fujian and Guangdong to Taiwan mostly, for the reason that there was no professional craftsman in Taiwan. Some craftsmen settled in here after finishing the works, and consequently there were more and more native painting craftsmen in Taiwan. In Lukang area, Guo’s painting is the most prestigious. Guo Xin-Lin was born in 1898, who is the third generation of the traditional painting artist in Lukang Guo’s family. His superb painting skills and profound literary quality were highly recognized and respected. It took 51 years long from 1920 to his last architecture work in Pingtung Ligang Shuang Chi Temple (屏東里港雙慈宮) in 1971. Guo’s works are mostly distributed over houses, ancestral shrines, temples and other buildings in the central regions. Data records that Guo had participated in nearly 50 architecture painting constructions. However, the field survey statistics says that the existing works of the building are only about 20. It’s a pity that his works disappeared rapidly. In view of the existing relevant information which is mostly based on Guo Xin-Lin’s life and works’ distribution, and barely discuss his works, the main point of this essay is going to analyze Guo’s works and to explore subjects, contents, composition, performance techniques that he used to take. Hence, both artistic and historical connotations were found from his architecture painting.
