| الوصف: | 103 This study focused on Gao Zhang (1837-1912), who was the first Christian believer of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan and his family during the early time of the religious advocacy. In 1865, Dr. James Laidlaw Maxwell Sr. of the Presbyterian Church of England set foot on the island (Taiwan) to begin medical missionary work. By serendipity, Gao Zhang accepted the Christian religion so as to preach the gospel with Dr. James and other foreign Christian missionaries. Although his life was harsh, he still devoted his life to God constantly. Gao Zhang witnessed the progress of evangelistic work by the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan during the early time of its advocacy. He also played a significant role in evangelism at the time. His family was greatly affected by his Christian faith. Besides, the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan not only promoted religious concepts, but also introduced western-style education, medicine and so on. These results stimulated innovation to culture of Taiwan as well as drove developing direction of the Gao family. Therefore, this study was to investigate Gao Zhang and his family and then to explore the relationship between the Gao family and the Presbyterian Church. Furthermore, it was discovered that the family members made outstanding progress and performance in the field of religion, medicine, music and politics, thereby reflecting their contribution and social status. |
