Aim:Population aging is pervasive in the world. It is crucial to improve quality of life for the elderly by getting rid of illness and slowing down functional deterioration. The study aims to investigate the factors associated with perceived visual acuity, hearing ability, and chewing capability for the middle-aged and older people in Taiwan. Methods: We used the database of the 6th Taiwan longitudinal study on aging by a cross-sectional study. The 4534 participants included 2270 men and 2264 women, and their mean ages were 68.85 years. The student t-test and ANOVA analyses were used to compare with the continuous variables. Multivariable regression analyses were used to determine the factors associated with perceived visual acuity, hearing ability, and chewing capability including variables with p < 0.05 in univariate analyses. A 2-tailed p < 0.05 was considered statisitically significant. Results: The older people, women, low education levels, residing at rural area, and no assets could be distributed exhibited poor visual acuity. Perceived bad health condition, diabetes, heart diseases, stroke, and cataract were independent factors for poor visual acuity. The older people, men, low education levels, residing at urban areas, and no assets could be distributed exhibited poor hearing ability. Perceived bad health condition, heart diseases, stroke, cancer, and cataract were independent factors were associated with poor hearing ability. The older people, men, having a spouse, low education levels, and no assets could be distributed showed poor chewing capability. Perceived bad health condition, hypertension, diabetes, heart diseases, stroke, and cataract were independent factors associated with poor chewing capability. Conclusion: The older people, low education levels, no assets, perceived bad health condition, coexisted with stroke, cataract, and heart diseases were associated with poor visual acuity, hearing ability, and chewing capability. Women exhibited worse visual acuity then did men. On the other hand, men showed worse hearing ability and chewing capability than did women. The people residing at urban areas exhibited poor hearing ability than did those at rural areas. On the contrary, the people residing at rural areas displayed poor visual acuity than did those at urban areas. Our findings might provide the government for the references of social resources distribution. Keywords: the middle-aged and older people, visual acuity, hearing ability, chewing capability
