الوصف: | 101 Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) over the past twenty years have been useful in treating urban stormwater runoff. Stormwater runoff contains pollutants. Different types of BMPs have different functions or pollutant removal efficiencies. To construct stormwater BMP, one has to know the costs associated with it. The research objective is to identify the relationships between the BMP functions and costs. Ten BMPs for treating stormwater runoff were evaluated. The costs are from land, construction, design, permitting and contingency, operation and maintenance. Land cost is a vital portion of the total cost of a BMP but not analysed. The research findings show a variation in the total costs of the BMPs and functions for 300M3 of treated water volume over a period of 50 years. The average construction cost amounts to US$75,933, indicating 23% of the average total cost. The operation and maintenance costs show the highest of $308,103, which is 70% of the total cost. Porous pavement has the highest total cost of $1,200,150. Retention basin amounts to $39,803, the lowest cost amongst the ten BMPs compared. Porous pavement has the highest pollutant removal efficiency of 90%, 74% and 85% for total suspended solids, total nitrogen and metals respectively. Filter strip has 99% of BOD/COD removal. Detention basin has the lowest pollutant removal efficiency of all the five pollutants in this study The correlations between BMP functions and costs vary from 0.15 for BOD/COD to 0.7 for total suspended solids. Filtration and infiltration systems are the most cost effective in terms of pollutant removal efficiency and cost. |
