This paper aims to analyze the news reports, a rhetorical action that persuades the audience, from a rhetorical perspective. As the chosen case study, the “sex photo scandal “has been analyzed by narrative criticism based on news agencies from China Times, United Daily News, Liberty Times, and Apple Daliy. Research questions include media’s imagination of itself, media’s value and its persuasion. Research result shows that, media tends to shape their characteristics as “social cultural critics”. Among these media, the Liberty Times and Apple Daliy also serve as mockers in this event. In terms of themes of narrative, the research results also indicate that, in this event, media particularly emphasizes “Edison Chen is the initiator of the whole event”, “famous people involved in this scandal were in an unfavorable situation”, and “cyber space loses its control and it’s hard to stop internet misbehaves”. These three themes of narrative are based on the traditional value of “Obscene is the evilest of all.” Regarding the narrative probability, result shows that, even thought the “sex photo scandal” is regarded as structurally consistent; however, this event is neither in line with the “material coherence” nor “characterological coherence”. In addition, regarding the narrative fidelity, the mainstream value of “Obscene is the evilest” is consistent with the prevailing value that unethical sex relationship may lead to social chaos. Consequently, most audiences are able to accept the given themes of narrative from existing media. Results indicate that all these four agencies make themselves as “social cultural critics”. Despite of the powerful influence of the four news agencies, the result of this research shows that, all of them feel contradictory regarding recognizing their respective roles when reporting this event. In addition, from a social responsibility’s perspective, media tend to shape readers’ values from only one perspective, failing to discipline media themselves to produce ideal news reports.
