Periodontal ligament (PDL) is a fibrous connective tissue that anchors the tooth to the bone of the jaw. The functions of the PDL are to support the tooth in the bone and resist the impact of occlusal forces during mastication, which are important in dental biomechanics. Although many studies have been employed to investigate the biomechanical responses of the PDL, large variations existed due to its complicated natural and difficulty in specimen preparation. The mechanical property of the PDL remains unclear. The objective of this study was to examine the mechanical property of the PDL in-vitro according to the comparison between the microCT experiments and finite element analysis. This study developed a custom-made in-vitro testing apparatus for measuring force and displacement of the porcine PDL specimen within microCT. Furthermore, synchronized CT images were taken to obtain the deformation of entire specimen and to reconstruct the 3D finite element model. Finite element analysis was then applied to simulate the biomechanical response of the PDL to match the experiment results. The experimental results indicate that the PDL has nonlinear and viscoelastic characteristics. Using hyperelastic material model in FEA might mimic the biomechanical response of the PDL. As the result, it is a novel method to investigate the biomechanical property of the PDL under loading by integration of in-vitro experiment in µCT and FEA and which could be adopted for future studies.
