Paternalistic leadership not only is a hot topic issue recently within the Chinese organizational studies, but also a spread leadership style in practical field. Actually, there have been lots of researches discussing the relationships between the three types of paternalistic leadership(benevolent, authoritarian, and moral leadership)and subordinate efficiency, and found the significant relations between them. Besides, the concept of trust in supervisor was usually viewed as a important mediating process between the leadership and subordinate efficiency. In recent years, however, there are many researchers contend that trust and distrust are distinct concepts and belong to the different mechanism. For the reason, our research is baesd on social exchange theory and social identity theory, and we point out that subordinates distrust in their supervisor which is also a important concept within the organizational behavior studies. We further complement the important role of trust between paternalistic leadership and subordinate efficiency. Data is collected 268 dyadic samples of Taiwanese supervisors and employees, and is analyzed by structural equation modeling. Result findings are as follows:1. Paternalistic leadership can significantly affect supervisory trust and distrust;2. Any style of paternalistic leadership has differential effects on supervisory trust and distrust;3. Both supervisory trust and distrust have significant impact on subordinate efficiency;4. Supervisory trust and distrust have differential effects on subordinate efficiency;5. Supervisory trust and distrust mediate the relationships between paternalistic leadership and subordinate efficiency. Finally, contributions and limitations are discussed, and suggestions are provided for future research and managerial practices in Chinese organizations.
