The polarization properties of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers(VCSEL)subject to optical feedback are studied experimentally. The feedback scheme is such that only one linear polarization is selected to be fed back into the laser while the orthogonal polarization is completely suppressed before the output is rotated 90° and reinjected into the laser. Polarization-selective optical feedback can be used to control the polarization stability of the VCSEL operating near the polarization-switching current and is easier to affect the dynamics of the VCSEL in the polarization stable regime. We demonstrate a data transparent reconfigurable optical interconnection system based on optical feedback controlled polarization switching in a VCSEL. A polarization -switching VCSEL is combined with an Quarter Wave Plate(QWP)to demonstrate reconfigurable free-space optical interconnects at a rate of 150 MHz. The same set of components is also used in a proof-of-principle demonstrator for data transparent reconfigurable optical interconnects at a bit rate from 300 MHz to 1 GHz and a reconfiguration rate of 150 MHz.
