This article is intended to illustrate some of the tenors by comparing these two classic works of Fantasy Literature. Viewing with Carl Jung’s concept of Collective Uncounsciousness, both writers conveyed the motif of ancient mythology in their works, so readers can find the archetypes through metaphors and symbols. Based on Joseph Campbell’s theory regarding process of Hero Quest--Departure, Initiation, and Return, the researcher analyzed His-Yu Chi and The Lord of the Rings. The implications can be used on reading and appreciation of other texts of children literature. Given the huge differences in the background of time and space between these two works, the researcher was led into the exploration of underlined philosophical connotation. Thus the article is done beyond the realm of literature comparison. In terms of the esthetic value of literature appreciation, the philosophical concepts have given the novels depth and enriched the works. We can see the connection, as well as the uniqueness, between the context structures of both works. The insights help us to understand the characteristic nature of human cultures. The theme of「Letting go of the ego attachment」has repeated in both His-Yu Chi and The Lord of the Rings. It seems to the researcher that the writers’ intention was to bring readers’focus of attention and awareness to this subject. These two great novels has revealed the sense of abstruseness of life. The difficulty and obscurity of life journey could expand our experiences about Life. With the greater and deeper understandings of Life after reading these two novels, we the readers can appreciate other children literature works more in depth. |
