The objectives of this work were to disperse surface-active agent (Q-Gurad) modified montmorillonite into chitosan, and to study the structure, thermal, mechanical and water absorption properties of the prepared composite films. No acetic acid residue in the composite films was confirmed from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed the cross-section roughness of the samples increased with the addition of clay. SEM/EDS results indicated that in chitosan/modified clay composite films, clay was dispersed homogeneously throughout the chitosan matrix. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results indicated that the intercalated-clay structure was developed with additions of small amounts of modified clay to the chitosan matrix. The intercalated clay not only enhanced the thermal stability but also increased the Young’s modulus of the chitosan films. In swelling experiments, the more Q-Guard incorporation in montmorillonite, the less water content in the saturated porous chitosancomposites.
