By analyzing the perceptions of children’s mothers, this study also tried to find out the links between the positive and the conflicting perceptions of mothers, Finally, the extent to which the positive and the conflicting perceptions vary by the demographic information of mothers and their mother-in-laws was tested. The measures of this study were developed by two steps. First, by in-depth interviewing five mothers of dual-earner families, this study sorted out the diverse perceptions of the mothers towards the mother-in-laws participating in children-rearing and developed into measurements. Then, the measurements was mailed to a panel of judges to indicate the validity and clarity of each item. The designed questionnaires were then mailed to the directors of the preschools in Taipei country .The interested mothers of dual-earner families were given the questionnaires and asked to fill them out. Totally there were 237 participants from 12 preschools deliberately chosen to represent the result of the study. Data was analyzed by using factor analysis, Pearson product-moment correlation, one-way ANOVA, t-test and Scheffe method. Results of the study were as followed: 1.The positive perception of children’s mothers towards mother-in-laws participating in child-rearing, including “the improvement of family relationship,” “parenting assistance,” “quality of life improvement,” “intergenerational cooperation in parenting,” “appreciation and gratefulness,” and “intergenerational transmission of experiences.” 2.The conflicting perception of children’s mothers towards mother-in-laws participating in child-rearing, including “child-rearing intrusion,” “guiltiness of children’s mothers towards mother-in-laws,” and “the motherhood stress among the interactions with mother-in-laws. 3.This study indicated the significant correlation between the positive and conflicting perception of children’s mothers towards mother-in-laws participating in child-rearing On the one hand, the more positive perception of children’s mothers felt towards mother-in-laws, the less the conflicting perception. On the other hand, the guiltiness of children’s mothers towards mother-in-laws was a special factor among the conflicting perceptions. Specially, there were positive relations between the guiltiness and the other positive perceptions. 4.The results indicated that the different educational groups of children’s mothers and mother-in-laws vary in the conflicting perceptions of children’s mothers. Compared with the“university” group, children’s mothers of the “junior college” group perceived more child-rearing intrusion from their mother-in-laws. Besides, the children’s mothers perceived more child-rearing intrusion from their mother-in-laws whose education were in “junior high and elementary school” group than those in the “senior high school” group. 5.The conflicting perceptions of children’s mothers were found to be different between the residing distance of children’s mothers and mother-in-laws. Compared with the group of mothers not living with their mother-in-laws, the group of mothers who lived with their mother-in-laws perceived more child-rearing intrusion from their mother-in-laws. 6.In-law relationship was found to influence the positive and conflicting perception of children’s mothers. The better the in-law relationship, the more positive perception and the less conflicting perception of children’s mothers would feel. |
