This study adopted the geostatistical method to assess spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity in the Choushui River alluvial fan. For thoroughly identifying the spatial variability, we used two variogram equations, divided into horizontal direction (large-scale) and vertical direction (small-scale), to analyze the spatial variation structure of hydraulic conductivity. Three-dimensional and two-dimensional estimated realizations by using ordinary kriging were compared and assessed by the spatial maps and statistical methods, including descriptive statistics, frequency histogram, cross validation. And the anisotropic variability of hydraulic conductivity was conducted. The study results indicate that the distributions of three-dimensional estimated realizations are similar to measured data along vertical directions. And the three-dimensional estimated realizations have the lowest estimated error by cross-validation and frequency histogram analysis. Using ordinary kriging to construct the spatial maps of hydraulic conductivity distribution, it shows that the smoothing effect on the actual variability will increase as the nugget effect increasing. The Pearson correlation analysis reveals that measured data correlate well with three-dimensional estimated realizations and poorly correlate with two- dimensional estimated realizations. The spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity apparently presents the minimum variation direction of N 15°W to N 120°W in the study area.
