Besides alcohol dehydration, acetic acid dehydration is a very common process in chemical industry. Although acetic and water do no form an azeotrope, this system have tangent pinch characteristics in VLE near pure water region thus using simple distillation to separate acetic acid from water is not feasible. This research proposal will explore the possibility of using vinyl acetate (VAc) as entrainer to obtain pure acetic acid and water products. In most distillation process, temperature measurements instead of product concentration are used to infer to product quality. In this study, the temperature-based control scheme is also selected.
