For clarifying the role(s) of betel quid chewing in oral both genotoxic and non-genotoxic effects of various betel quid upon oral mucosal fibroblasts were investigated. Results found betel quid contain both genotoxic and non-genotoxic components. exhibited both antioxidant and cytotoxic properties. Safrole is toxic component. The multiple chemical interactions might lead to mutation in betel quid chewers. The studies of glutathione may possible way of oral cancer chemoprevention in the future.
