الوصف: Apparent competition may be occurring between invasive and native plants, in which the invasive increases the abundance of an herbivore, which in turn impacts native plants. The extended leaf phenology (ELP) of the invasive shrub, Lonicera maackii, may elevate deer populations by providing deer in early spring with twigs with leaves, which are more nutritious than twigs without leaves. I found that deer in the Miami University Natural Areas browsed on L. maackii throughout the year, especially in spring and summer, and the early spring leaves and stems of L. maackii were higher in protein than leafless stems of co-occurring woody species. L. maackii had a higher frequency than all other woody species. I estimated that L. maackii made up at least 15% of deer diet. L. maackii is likely elevating the deer population in the Natural Areas because its ELP provides deer with a nutritious food in early spring.
