The National AeroSpace Plane (NASP) national contractor team began formal operations on January 31, 1991, and made considerable progress toward demonstrating the feasibility of the X-30 and the technology readiness to enter a full-scale development program. Two cycles of conceptual design are complete, preliminary design is initiated, and many of the major configuration and structural arrangement decisions are complete. Results of work in supporting technology areas for a variety of the propulsion system technologies are mentioned, including the low-speed oxidizer system, the production of slush hydrogen, and the use of external burning. Results of tests currently being performed on structural demonstration articles are satisfactory. Each of these demonstration articles is representative of structures and materials to be incorporated into the team's X-30 design. An operating team is outlined that encompasses not only the five principal contractors and their subcontractors, but also government and university laboratories through an innovative arrangement that brings this work into the mainstream of the program. |
