Ceramic borides materials have a unique properties such as high hardness, Young Modulus, chemical and oxidation resistance and high melting point. Particularly diborides are characterized by stability, thanks to strong chemical bonds and relations about atomic radius between metal and boron. Tantalum diboride have also high density and melting point above 3000°C. This properties makes TaB2 potentially useful in application including defense and chemical industries, cutting tools, machine parts working at high temperatures. These applications requires to check selected properties of materials at high temperatures. This paper presents results of tribological research of tantalum diboride, using ball-on-disc method. The starting material is a sinter of TaB2 obtained by reactive sintering using SPS method. Sintering parameters were 2100°C and 30 minutes. Obtained material has an apparent density of 11.22 g/cm3, the Young's modulus of 500 GPa and Vickers hardness of 19.5 GPa. Friction coefficient and wear indicator were determined. The tests were carried out in the range from room temperature up to 800°C. Microscopic observations and Vickers hardness after tribological tests were carried out. Friction coefficient of tantalum diboride compact at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 600°C was in the range from 0.57–0.75. Temperature increase to a value of 800°C resulted in a significant decrease in the value of the tested coefficient to 0.16. Wear rate of tantalum diboride samples decreased gradually with temperature increase of tribological tests (from 284 through 260 to 173 mm3/N·m). However at a temperature of 600°C and 800°C there was a rapid decrease in the wear ratio to the value of 32 mm3/N·m and 52 mm3/N·m. |
