The specialized literature increasingly understands that the middle tier is made up of different organizations and actors with different and complementary roles. However, it is still in the early stages of being studied. This article is based on research whose aim is to describe the school improvement organizations that, from the levels immediately above the school, have the role of supporting school leadership. A case study of qualitative descriptive type was carried out, using a narrative map methodology, corresponding to a group of technical advisors of a new Local Public Education Service (SLEP) in Chile. The results show a diversity of representations and recognize six types of functions performed by these organizations from the perspective of technical advisors. The articulation between the structural, network and ecological dimensions of school improvement is discussed, as well as the role of policy connector and change agent played by middle-tier professionals with the improvement organizations present in their environment. ; Cada vez más la literatura especializada comprende que el nivel intermedio (“middle tier”) se compone de diversas organizaciones y actores que operan con roles diferenciales y complementarios. Sin embargo, su conocimiento es aún incipiente. El presente artículo se basa en un estudio cuyo objetivo es describir las organizaciones de mejora escolar que, desde niveles inmediatamente superiores al centro educativo, tienen el rol de apoyo al liderazgo escolar. Se realizó un estudio de caso único de tipo descriptivo cualitativo, empleando una metodología de mapas narrativos, correspondiente a un grupo de asesores técnicos de un nuevo Servicio Local de Educación Pública (SLEP) de Chile. Los resultados muestran una diversidad de representaciones y reconocen seis tipos de funciones realizadas por estas organizaciones desde la perspectiva de asesores técnicos y sus superiores.
