الوصف: Unemployed In Possession Of Relief Office: Will Stay there Until Demands For Resumption Of Aid Are Met, Leaders Of Jobless Group State. ; UNEMPLOYED IN POSSESSION OF RELIEF OFFICE Will Stay there Until Demands for Resumption Of Aid Are Met, Leaders Of Jobless Group State With the relief situation becoming more acute here today since the shutdown Thursday night of all FERA and other relief work within the county, unemployed have virtually taken possession of the placement office of the FERA in Coeur d'Alene and, according to some of the leaders, will remain there until their demands are met. Between 60 and 100 on the FERA and other relief rolls were in the placement office or on the sidewalk in front this afternoon. The only answer received thus far in reply to telegrams asking for immediate resumption of FERA projects and for continuance of other relief, sent by county, city and FERA officials yesterday, was addressed to Raymond Thompson, county FERA manager, and signed by E. P. Horsfall, Boise, state FERA manager. The information was to the effect that "everything possible" is being done to relieve the situation. Situation Becoming Acute Mayor J. K. Coe today wired Harry Hopkins, Washington, D. C., relief administrator, the following: "Situation hourly becoming more acute. Stopping all relief without notice after promises of continued relief work is creating bitter resentment. Something must be done at once to avoid real trouble. May I hear from you." Mayor Coe asked a committee representing the unemployed to prepare a list of the absolute essentials of food for those now without food, and indicated that the city would fill the breach by supplying such necessities. A list was being prepared this afternoon. Throughout their occupancy yesterday and today of the FERA office, the unemployed have been peaceful. It was understood that Thompson is at Spokane to push the matter of obtaining immediate relief. Present New Demands Over 100 unemployed attended a meeting at the courthouse today of the Relief Workers Protective Union, presided over by Wm. Bernard. Demands included: "An immediate and adequate system of distributing relief before the FERA is functioning; no discrimination against workers participating in present struggle; that the national reemployment service furnish a copy of the blacklist of all men for forestry work and explain why names are on the list; that immediate direct relief be given to all families and workers in the struggle to reinstate the FERA; that no part of those now unemployed be forced to work until adequate system is set up to provide for the needs of all workers, and that sufficient jobs be provided (or direct relief) to accommodate all local workers who are able to work, local men to be given preference to men from the outside." Several unemployed leaders today turned down forestry and other jobs, inferring they were offered them solely to quiet the demonstration.
