الوصف: Cogeneration is a well-known and widespread energy production technology. The cogeneration system recovers and utilizes the heat generated in various parts of a machine that generates electricity. This significantly reduces energy losses and increases the efficiency of the energy production process. The buildings of the tertiary sector and especially the hospitals present ideal conditions for the implementation of the system. However, despite the significant environmental and economic benefits offered by cogeneration, the levels of technology penetration in Greece remain very low. The scientific object of the thesis concerns the technical and economic evaluation of electricity and heat cogeneration systems (CHP) or electricity, heat and cooling cogeneration systems (CCHP), known as trigeneration systems, which are in operation. The thesis focused on the collection and analysis of actual operating data and afterwards on the evaluation of performance in relation to design data. At the same time, an attempt was made to investigate the causes that prevent the penetration of cogeneration in Greece, through the evaluation of existing projects. In the first part, a systematic method to evaluate the economic operating performance of existing combined heat and power (CHP) or combined cooling heat and power (CCHP) generation systems was developed. Two key performance indicators were selected to evaluate both the technical and the economic performance, based on operating recording data; the capacity factor and the capital recovery. The method was then applied to evaluate eight cogeneration projects operating in Athens with the purpose to reveal the current situation of CHP in Greece and identify reasons that are hindering its penetration. A sensitivity analysis was also performed to check the validity of the key assumptions and to verify the accuracy of the results. Interesting conclusions were reached from the analysis.
