الوصف: | This dissertation concerns the role of spatial attention in the processing of printed words and letters, and more specifically how spatial attention can influence bottom up processing of word and letter stimuli. To do so, we combined the masked repetition priming paradigm with a standard exogenous cueing paradigm. With single letter stimuli, our results showed a robust modulation of repetition priming effects as a function of whether or not the prime location (left or right of fixation) was validly cued. The same result was further demonstrated, first behaviourally with an IOR manipulation, and second in an ERP study that revealed a significant modulation of the P3 component as a function of prime relatedness but only in the presence of valid cues. In a further study, a parametric manipulation of stimulus eccentricity was used with words. Primes and targets could appear at the same location at varying eccentricities, or only prime location varied with centrally located targets. Findings showed for both conditions a right visual field advantage, and robust priming effects were limited to the most foveal eccentricities when targets were centrally located. The presence of such hemifield differences at an early stage of word processing is an original result. These latter findings suggest that priming can at least be partially location-specific. Interestingly, these effects were replicated with single letter stimuli, and most important this pattern of results was shown not to be contaminated by eye-movements or prime visibility. These findings were interpreted within the framework of an extended version of open-bigram coding of printed words that includes attention as a modulating bias of the earliest phase of orthographic processing. |
