الوصف: 14 S. ; Hardmetal compositions based on WC and Cr3C2 are widely used for thermal spray coating solutions for wear protection. This includes compositions containing both WC and Cr3C2. Studies with thermal spray feedstock powders and corresponding coatings have revealed that the interaction of WC and Cr3C2 over the full composition range is not systematically studied yet. Thus, the aim of this study is a more systematic initial investigation of interaction of WC and Cr3C2 in sintered bodies for future hardmetal compositions to be used for thermal spray coating solutions. Six binary and the two boundary mixtures with WC and Cr3C2, respectively, containing all a constant content of 15 vol.% Ni were prepared. Samples were densified by spark plasma sintering (SPS) with sintering temperature in the range between 1170 °C and 1270 °C with holding times in the range of 2-5 min. In order to study the progress of interaction of WC and Cr3C2all samples were then HIPed in argon (60 bar) at 1400 °C for 315 min. All samples were successfully densified by SPS, while HIPing lead to a decrease in density for the Cr3C2- rich compositions. All samples were studied by FESEM and XRD. Strong grain growth and significant microstructural changes were observed for some composition in result of HIPing. Different from other studies, no formation of new carbide phases (e.g. (W,Cr)2C, chromium-rich M7C3) was observed.
