One of the key features of a sound animal health program includes biosecurity and this is ensuring that no disease will be transmitted to your herd or flock.Farm biosecurity can be categorized into structural and operational. Structural biosecurity concerns the design of the farm and the buildings. It includes gates and fences which are to be maintained regularly.A good structural biosecurity system keeps your animals in and the intruders out.Operational biosecurity involves the daily management of the site. The latter can be achieved using two measures: biological, and chemical. Part of the biological biosecurity is the mere location of the farm; it being away from the highway and far from neighboring houses.Human traffic is also regulated, so unnecessary visits and walk-in visits are not encouraged. Lastly, chemical biosecurity measures would include using disinfectants for the vehicle and foot baths. |
