الوصف: Background: With the reduction of natural rangeland areas and their productivity in sub-saharian Africa, animal feed must turn to other resources, such as crop co-products. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the in vivo digestibility of improved sorghum varieties, in order to identify those that would respond best to the dual use of grain production and straw as fodder. Methods: Trials were conducted on four sorghum varieties (Fadda, Grinkan, Djiguikala, Zalatimi). Straw intake and digestibility were evaluated on 12 adult Djallonké rams, in digestibility cages with total faeces collection. The diet consisted of crushed sorghum straw offered ad libitum, supplemented with cottonseed cake (100g/d). The feeds offered and refused were analyzed to determine the apparent digestibility of dry matter (dMS), organic matter (dMO) and crude protein (dMAT). Results: The sorghum straws had MAT contents ranging from 2.9 to 5.7%DM. Feed intake was highest for Grinkan (366.9 g/d) and lowest for Djiguikala (266.4 g/d). The highest dMS, dMO and dMAT values were obtained with Zalatimi at 44.4%, 43.5 and 42.4% respectively. The lowest dMS was observed with Djiguikala (37.3%) and the lowest dMO and dMAT with Fadda (35.8% and 24.7% respectively). Conclusions: The varieties with the best digestibilities, Grinkan and Zalatimi, are also those with the best ingestibility, and they have suitable MAT contents. These initial results show that some sorghum varieties are a priori more favorable for animal feed, but research needs to be supplemented by zootechnical trials over a longer period.
