Background: The valorization of crop residues for ruminant feed constitutes a solution to fill part of the forage deficit of pastoral and agropastoral livestock systems during the dry season in West Africa, in a context of climate change. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess agropastoralists’ perceptions of techniques for improving the use of crop residues - generally cereal straws and legume haulms - for livestock feed. Methods: A survey was carried out among 60 farm managers in the commune of Koumbia in south-west Burkina Faso. Results: The typology obtained enables us to identify three groups of farmers - farmers, livestock breeders and agro-breeders - according to the area they cultivated in maize and cotton and the number of cattle in their possession. All three groups expressed the same favorable perception and appreciation of the valorization of crop residues for animal feed. In fact, 89% of agro-pastoralists, 87% of farmers and 69% of livestock farmers gave priority to using crop residues to supplement their livestock. Even if half of them, whatever the group, were aware of techniques for valorizing crop residues, they practiced them very little. Indeed, a small proportion of farmers and stockbreeders (9.1%) and agro-breeders (6.2%) reported sprinkling straw with salt water to improve its nutritional quality. In addition, crop residues were most often stored on shed roofs, revealing a lack of storage facilities. Conclusions: this study showed that treatments to improve the nutritive value of crop residues are little used, due to farmers’ poor command of them, their uncertainty as to their effectiveness, and the lack of infrastructure. ; Contexto: La valorización de los residuos de cultivo en la alimentación de los rumiantes constituye una solución para compensar una parte del déficit forrajero en los sistemas de ganadería pastoral y agropastoral durante la estación seca en África Occidental, en un contexto de cambio climático.
