الوصف: Idaho Firm In Conviction That Borah Can't Be Licked. ; Idaho Firm In Conviction That Borah Can't Be Licked BY RICHARD L. NEUBERGER Special Correspondent, The Oregonian POCATELLO, Dec. 19--This state of undulating uplands and crag-studded mountains has about taken for granted the fact that its senior senator holds a life membership in America's supreme lawmaking body. Conversation with the typical Idaho people--the blue-denimed farmer riding between way-points in a day-coach, the physician traveling by Pullman to a medical meeting--leads to the conviction that the state believes William E. Borah cannot be beaten for public office in his home commonwealth. November 3 Senator Borah was elected to his sixth consecutive senatorial term. He has been in the upper chamber since 1906. At the end of this term he will be 77 years old, and will have served 36 years in the senate. He has been there longer than any living man. Three Other Veterans Active The only terms to approach that of Senator Borah in length are those of George W. Norris of Nebraska, Joseph T. Robinson of Arkansas and Morris Sheppard of Texas. They entered the senate in 1912. Norris was a member of the house of representatives from 1902 until 1912. "Uncle Joe" Cannon, the famed speaker of the house, served in the lower chamber for 46 years. The people of Idaho think, should Senator Borah live long enough, it is entirely possible he may equal this service in the upper chamber. Senator Borah's friends point out that the late Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes sat on the supreme court until he was 90. Should Senator Borah continue that long in the senate he would have served there 49 years. Ross Supreme Test Not even the most extreme of democratic partisans believe Borah ever will meet defeat in Idaho. "Cowboy Ben" Ross was formidable opposition, and he entered the lists supported by all the patronage power a governor normally possesses. It was a democratic year and President Roosevelt swept Idaho. Yet Borah conquered Ross by a margin of nearly two to one. The rumor is prevalent in Idaho that the senator was not particularly unfriendly to Governor Landon, but that he was irked by both John D. M. Hamilton and Colonel Knox, whom he considered too reactionary.
