In the Bolivian highlands, bezoar stones are called jayntilla, jayuntilla or jarintilla. These are gastric stones from ruminant animals, mainly llamas, with important medicinal powers, especially for curing "susto" (fright). The use of these stones is of pre-Hispanic origin, but during the colony they were ingested (dissolved in liquid) as a panacea used against poisons and used as a jewel/amulet to remove melancholy, attend to the passions of the heart or to become rich. This paper addresses the political and ideological differences between the current use of these stones and the colonial use. ; En el altiplano boliviano, las piedras bezoar reciben el nombre de jayntilla, jayuntilla o jarintilla. Se trata de piedras gástricas de animales rumiantes, principalmente la llama, con importantes poderes medicinales, especialmente anímicos para curar el «susto». El uso de estas piedras es de origen prehispánico, pero durante la colonia fueron ingeridas (disueltas en líquido) como una panacea utilizada contra venenos y utilizadas como joya/amuleto para quitar la melancolía, atender las pasiones del corazón o para hacerse ricos. Este trabajo aborda las diferencias políticas e ideológicas entre el uso actual de estas piedras y el uso colonial. |
