This paper will explore the idea of situating creative practice within teleconferencing in the era of COVID-19 as a means of using the technology itself to manufacture contemporary art. As the staples of online video calls such as Zoom, Teams, and Skype facilitate instantaneous and democratised person-to-person online communication, artists have since the outbreak of the pandemic demonstrated new ways to use these platforms. Discussion will include artists who disrupt Zoom conventions as a portrayal of absence and isolation that re-examine strategies that reappropriate existing visual arts products and techniques unpacked later as a reading of the creative artefacts. As such, discussion will frame examples of practice to include Maria Malpeki’s There is no such things as Internet (Malpecki), Michael Mandiberg’s Uncle Bob 85th birthday vi Zoom 3:00-4:00PM, August 16, 2020 (#24) (Mandiberg) and Shaun Wilson’s Fading Light (Wilson). It will investigate how artists can use innovation to locate new ways of applied practice in responding to the limitations of and tools used within online platforms of teleconferencing during the pandemic |
