الوصف: Publications of peer-reviewed research results constitute the core of scientific communication. Bibliometrics provides statistics on this form of communication, which in recent decades has been adopted by research policy for funding allocations. The model for allocation is based on the use of bibliometric indicators as performance measures, which have raised concerns within the scientific community that researchers may adapt their research practice solely to these measures. Researchers must receive funding to be able to carry out their projects, but little is known about how they balance this reality with the scientific standards for good research practice. Focusing on bibliometric indicators, this study investigates which factors, both within and outside of the scientific community, that influence researchers' publication strategies in order to satisfy both internal and external performance measures. To get detailed and in-depth answers about this phenomenon, six biologists at different stages of their careers were interviewed. The results were analyzed through a qualitative content analysis based on the traditional research guidelines CUDOS, and the concept of performance management. The biologists' publication strategies were clearly marked by scientific norms, but to live up to these norms their strategies could at the same time be affected by the bibliometric indicators used by policies for funding. Therefore, most of the biologists' publication strategies were to some extent adapted to the external performance measures, such as by publishing in journals with a high Journal Impact Factor. Their main goal, however, was to contribute knowledge to their research area, which meant publishing in journals with the most appropriate scope. This shows that external performance measures are not needed in order to advance scientific knowledge.
