الوصف: Pilots don’t spring up at birth, even if they were born near Peloro Cape, in the Straits of Messina. It is possible to become a pilot and in order to turn into one there are two ways: either by gaining direct experience on the billows and against the currents or by learning it in an appropriate school. In Palermo, at the end of the 18th century, it was chosen the way to train pilots would be through an educational system. The Royal Nautical Seminary was officially founded in 1788 and opened in 1789 by Monsignor Gioeni of the Anjou dukes, who wanted it as an institute «able to supply the city and Sicily» with qualified seafaring men: a nautical college for the instruction of the sailors was thus born.
