الوصف: The symbiosis that exists between chemoautotrophic γ-protobacteria and vestimentiferan tubeworms found at hydrothermal vents and cold-seeps, makes it possible for these complex organisms to survive in toxic, sulfidic deep-sea environments. In this study, genetic sequences were generated and combined with previously published molecular data to investigate the genetic diversity among vestimentiferan symbionts from both hydrothermal vent and cold-seep sites collected in the Guaymas Basin. Symbiont 16S ribosomal gene and RuBisCO gene sequences were used to generate phylogenetic relationships among the symbionts of three different host vestimentifera: Riftia pachyptila, Lamellibrachia barhami, and Escarpia spicata. Genetic diversity was observed in both genes studied, with significantly more variation seen in the RuBisCO sequences. Symbiont haplotype diversity was examined across both host species and host collection site. Results of this analysis suggest the symbionts to be site-specific, not host species-specific.
