The e-SAFE innovation project financed by the Horizon2020 Programme and led by the University of Catania, isdeveloping, testing and demonstrating an innovative combinedenergy-and-seismic renovation solution for ReinforcedConcrete (RC) framed buildings based on the additionof Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) boards to the outerwalls, in combination with wood-based insulation. In thispaper, the proposed renovation solution (called e-CLT) isinvestigated in terms of moisture-related risks, i.e., themold growth and the increase in heat losses due to LiquidWater Content (LWC) within building materials. To thisaim, dynamic simulations are performed by means of Delphin6.1, thus including combined heat and mass transfer (HAMT) due to water vapor migration and accumulation. The results show that, although there is no significant riskof mold growth in the e-CLT for climate conditions prevalentin Northern Italy, the moisture content within the materialsimplies an increase by about 10 % in the heat lossesif compared with a dry wall. Furthermore, inaccurate materialproperties and boundary outdoor climate conditionscan affect the reliability of the results: for this reason, amore appropriate hygrothermal characterization of materialsis recommended, as well as the identification of suitableclimate datasets, which, however, are not alwaysavailable. |
