Professor Joseph Maciariello, Horton Professor of Management for the Drucker School of Management, at Claremont Graduate University, discusses Peter Drucker’s contributions to the ServiceMaster Foundation and its spread to China in the form of Bright China Service Industry, owned by Ming Lo Shao. He also discusses what Drucker termed the “spirit of performance,” and its characteristics. Professor Maciariello states that there are three aspects of the “spirit of performance,” an organization must capitalize on the strengths of its employees, it must have high performance standards, and lastly it must appoint executives whose character and integrity serves as a model for fellow employees. Additionally, Professor Maciariello relates how Drucker was given advice by Alfred Sloan of General Motors who advised him to, “Tell me what you think is right for this corporation. Don’t tell me what you think will work…” |
